About the Juneteenth Doodle
This Doodle celebrates Juneteenth, a federal holiday that commemorates the day when African Americans in Galveston, Texas received a formal announcement of emancipation. Their commemoration of this event has spread across the Americas, and it was recognized as a Texas holiday in 1980. The Doodle artwork, illustrated by San Francisco-based guest artist Monique Wray, represents both African American heritage and Texan culture in each letter panel.
Line dancing is central in the artwork as an expression of celebration in Black culture. Other themes and symbols can be spotted including the mockingbird, Texas’ official state bird. Also, boots, fans and coveralls are found throughout the illustration, referencing “old west” attire and Black Texans who served as some of the region’s earliest cowboys. Line dancers enjoy music played by a record-spinning DJ, paying homage to the rich history and evolution of Black music in America. Lastly, bluebonnets on either side symbolize both the state flower and the Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, which was established by former slaves and fought for Black economic, political, and cultural autonomy during segregation.
As of 2021, Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday for the United States, and is observed through a range of community activities to acknowledge the contributions of those who fought relentlessly for freedom.
Special thanks to our cultural consultant, Kerri Greenidge, professor at Tufts University in the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora, for supporting the Doodle creation.
